What are different degrees and majors from universities?
The terms 'degree' and 'majors' indicate two different aspects of an education.
The 'degree' refers to the level of education i.e. Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D.
The 'major' on the other hand refers to the field of study such as computer
science or business. After the 12th grade the student can enroll for the
Bachelor’s degree. The term undergraduate program is same as the term,
Bachelor’s degree. Bachelor’s degree is followed with a Master’s degree which
is same as a Graduate Program. At a graduate school the workload is much higher
and students would begin to streamline their careers by gaining professional
skills in a particular area.
Apart
from gaining specialized skills students would be involved in research projects
in the capacity of teaching or research assistants to a faculty member. This
provides invaluable hands on practical experience, which enable students to
transfer their knowledge in the industrial setting with practical ease.
Students interested in a research oriented or academic career would then pursue
the Doctoral degree. (Ph.D.) The Doctoral degree is the highest level of
education and is an intensive research program on one particular aspect. For
example one might want to study in-depth the process of meta-cognition. The
research is extremely detailed and the focus of the study is extremely
microscopic. Some colleges may offer an associate degree.
These degrees are generally spread over two years. Students who are keen to
gain technical skills would pursue an associate degree as it focuses to a large
extent on vocational training. In the long term a bachelor’s degree however is
much more valued than an associate degree. There is a wide range of majors to
choose from. A student can pursue programs in Humanities, Education,
Engineering, Management, Law, Pharmacy and Health related programs such as
medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Management programs
include a wide range of courses such as the Healthcare, Environmental,
International Business and Project Management. An engineering student can choose
to major in Computer Engineering, Electrical engineering, Mechanical
engineering, Chemical Engineering and Aerospace engineering.
